<p>I was asked today by a follower on Twitter for tips on how best to travel from Venice to Ljubljana.  Its a journey we have done by car but not by public transport.  What are the options then?</p>

<p>The remote Upper Savinja Valley in Štajerska is a playground for walkers, mountaineers, cyclists and kayakers.  The two villages of Luče and Solčava, situated near the head of the valley, are ideal bases from which to explore this beautiful valley and the surrounding hills and mountains.</p>

<p>Kamnik is a bustling town with a very attractive historical centre. <p>Postojna is a modern bustling town and the commercial centre for quite a wide area in the region of Notranjska. <p>Idrija and Cerkno lie in the wooded foothills of the Julian Alps, an area that is often overlooked which is a shame because in the steeply wooded valleys are several unusual attractions.  The woods provided protection and a base of operations for the Partisans in WWII and some sites still remain and are open to visitors. <p>Kranjska Gora is perhaps better known as a skiing resort but when the snow melts away there is some fine walking in the valleys and, as the town nestles below the Julian Alps, on the mountains too.  The old town centre is small but pretty and from the Tourist Information Centre there we begin our walks.</p>
