Height gain – approx 400m over the two walks

Grade – easy; good paths and tracks, although rough in places and slippery when wet.

Recommended map(s) – are the 1:50 000 Triglavski Narodni Park or either of the Julijske Alpe (vzhodni del – eastern or zahodni del – western) maps, published by PZS.

15. Krn – a mountain walk

Walk 15 – Krn – a mountain walk, from a Walking Guide to Slovenia.

One of our favourite mountain walks. Mt Krn stands a little apart from the other mountains of the Julian Alps and so a climb to its summit is rewarded with fine views over the Triglav National Park, and in the other direction, over the Po Plain of northern Italy. Our walk takes in Batognica, where the remains of WWI defences of the Isonzo Front can still be clearly seen.

Distance – 11.8km/7.3mile

Height gain – approx 1360m

Time – 7h30min

Grade – very strenuous; a commiting mountain walk for good weather conditions.

16. Kobarid Historical Walk

Walk 16 – The Kobarid Historical Walk, from a Walking Guide to Slovenia.

Following the Kobarid Historical Walk, we visit along the way the Italian Charnel House on the Hill of St Anthony and Tonocov Grad, a hilltop site used as a place of refuge and settlement over the centuries. The walk passes through some of the WWI trenches and positions of the Italian Third Line of Defence on the Isonzo Front, as well as crossing the River Soča and visiting the Kozjak waterfall.

Time – 1h53min

Grade – easy; on good but occasionally steep paths and tracks.

13. Bovec and the River Soča Walk

Beginning in the centre of Bovec this walk follows the banks of the River Soča before heading through the villages of Kal and Koritnica. A rural walk through quite countryside with superb mountain views.

Distance – 12km/7.5miles

Height gain – approx 100m

Time – 2h50min

Grade – easy, on good paths and tracks.

Exploring the upper reaches of the River Soča from Trenta right up the river’s source, Izvir Soče, this walk, the Soča Pot, also visits the Kugy Monument, a hidden gorge and the Juliana Alpine Botanical Garden.

Grade – easy, on good paths and roads. The climb to the Izvir Soče is tricky and only recommended for confident scramblers; it can easily be omitted.

11. The source of the River Soča and Vršič, Slovenia

Walk 11 – from the source of the River Soča (Izvir Soce) to Vršič and back again, from a Walking Guide of Slovenia.

Beginning at the source of the River Soča (almost a place of pilgrimage for many Slovenians) the walk soon climbs to a high-level traverse, offering stunning views over the Julian Alps, to the high Vršič Pass.

Time – 4h17min

Grade – strenuous.  Mainly on good paths and tracks, but the initial climb is a steep and unrelenting ascent of 500m.
