A walk from the Škocjan Caves Visitor Centre
by David Robertson ~ 29-Oct-2009 ~ updated 22-Dec-2009Walk 29 – a walk from the Škocjan Caves Visitor Centre, from a Walking Guide to Slovenia.

Modern painted beehives, Slovenia.
After visiting the wonderful Škocjan Caves, why not spend a few hours wandering alongside the River Reka to find a ruined castle above a deep gorge and the attractive village of Famlje.
Start/Finish – Škocjan Caves visitor centre
Distance – 10.8km/6.7miles
Height gain - approx 250m
Time – 2h40min
Grade – easy-moderate; mainly on good paths and tracks. The descent from the castle is a bit steep and slippy.
Recommended map(s) – are the 1:50 000 Slovenska Istra and the 1:6 000 (yes, really!) Regijski park Škocjanske jame maps, published by PZS
Equipment – Walking boots, walking sticks. See our clothing and walking equipment page for more recommendations.
Refreshments on route – none
Updates to the 2005, 2nd Edition – We were disappointed to find that on the walk from Skocjan Caves Visitor Centre there was not a lovely, wide, slowly flowing river, but several stagnant pools, and the diving board was broken and unsafe. Certainly one would not want to swim there.(User, 8/07) + The water levels were OK in June 2009 and the diving board had been repaired. Added by the authors in 06-09
Public transport – There is no public transport to the Škocjan Caves Visitor Centre. The nearest train station is at Divača, about 5km away.
Nearest Town/Village – Our base for this walk is Postojna, which has hotels, apartments and rooms plus a Youth Hostel. The nearest campsite is the Pivka Jama Camp located about 4km north-west of the town. Postojna has an excellent range of shops, and places to eat.
