Tourist Information for Tolmin, Slovenia
by David Robertson ~ 12-Oct-2009 ~ updated 25-Jan-2010Tolmin is the main administrative centre of the Upper Soča Valley but seems to miss out as a major tourist destination. The River Soča is now wider and more placid and less attractive to kayakers and rafters, the hills lower and wooded and less exciting than their neighbouring mountains further up the valley. But hidden in nearby valleys are a number of attractions, a good reason not to simply bypass Tolmin.
Attractions around Tolmin
- The River Soča – is now placid, wide and amazingly blue. At Most na Soči, the river is damned and beside the lake there are some pleasant walks and picnic sites.
- Tolmin Gorges – Probably Tolmin’s main attraction. Lying at the lowest point of the Triglav National Park the confluence of the dramatic Tolminke and Zadlaščice gorges is a wonderful spot and can be easily explored (see our Walk 18). Nearby is Dante’s cave where the writer spent some time in exile. The gorges are best accessed from Zatolmin, just north of the town.
- Javorca, Memorial Church of the Holy Spirit (Sv. Duh) -located in the Tolminka Valley. It was built by soldiers of the Austro-Hungarian army as a memorial to their fallen comrades who died fighting on the Isonzo Front in WWI. Over 2800 soldiers names are recorded inside, written on wooden panels. The church is open May, June and September on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays from 10.00 to 17.00; July and August every day, Mon – Fri 10.00 to 17.00, Sat – Sun. 10.00 -19.00, rainy days closed. We once visited out of season and were given the key at the Tolmin Local Tourist Board Office.
