Travel from Venice to Ljubljana

I was asked today by a follower on Twitter for tips on how best to travel from Venice to Ljubljana. Its a journey we have done by car but not by public transport. What are the options then?

By train seemed the most obvious way and there is a direct line. However, there is only one train per day, leaving from Venice S Lucia at 21.20PM and Venice Mestre at 21.32PM, arriving in Ljubljana at 01.40AM. This is hardly a convenient time to arrive in a new city! Times and prices can be found on the RailEurope website.

The other direct option, by bus, is more straightforward and the one we would prefer. The route is operated by DRD who are based in Ljubljana. Buses leave daily from the front of Venice Mestre train station at 11:00AM and arrive in Ljubljana at 15:00PM – much more handy! A ticket costs Euro25 (a return is Euro45). Another option, although I have not fully researched this, would be to take the train to Trieste (Trst in Slovene)and then catch a bus to Ljubljana.
