35. Pohorje – Veliki Šumik
Walk 35 – a walk on the Pohorje massif to the waterfall Veliki Šumik, from a Walking Guide to Slovenia.
The heavily wooded Pohorje massif, the ‘lungs of Maribor’, is a popular spot for Slovenians all year round. In the heart of this area lies one of Eastern Slovenia’s beauty spots, the Šumik waterfalls, hidden deep in virgin forest.
Start/Finish – at the Hotel Areh
Distance – 15km/9.4miles
Height gain – approx 350m
Time – 3h38min

Grade – moderate-strenuous; the walk is mainly on easy unsurfaced roads, forest tracks and paths, but the descent to the waterfalls crosses steep ground and can be wet and slippery. On this section you will need to use your hands and have a head for heights.
Recommended map – is the 1:50 000 Pohorje map, published by PZS
Equipment – Walking boots. See our clothing and walking equipment page for more recommendations.
Refreshments on route – at either the Hotel Areh or Ruška koča at the start/finish of the walk.
Updates to the 2019, 5th Edition – There are no updates.
Public transport – We do not think there is a bus service to Areh.
Nearest Towns/Villages – Maribor, Slovenia’s second city, has plenty of hotels, apartments, rooms and a camping site. See this website for Maribor tourist information.
