15. Krn – a mountain walk
Walk 15 – Krn – a mountain walk, from a Walking Guide to Slovenia.

One of our favourite mountain walks. Mt Krn stands a little apart from the other mountains of the Julian Alps and so a climb to its summit is rewarded with fine views over the Triglav National Park, and in the other direction, over the Po Plain of northern Italy. Our walk takes in Batognica, where the remains of WWI defences of the Isonzo Front can still be clearly seen.
Start/Finish – Planina Kuhinja above Krn village

Distance – 11.8km/7.3mile
Height gain – approx 1360m
Time – 7h30min
Grade – very strenuous; a commiting mountain walk for good weather conditions.
Recommended map(s) – are the 1:50 000 Triglavski Narodni Park or the Julijske Alpe zahodni del (western) map published by PZS.
Equipment – Walking boots, walking sticks. See our clothing and walking equipment page for more recommendations.
Refreshments on route – In season, drinks and basic meals at the summit hut of Gomišćkovo Zatetišče on Krn. See our mountain huts of Slovenia page more information.
