11. The source of the River Soča and Vršič, Slovenia
Walk 11 – from the source of the River Soča (Izvir Soce) to Vršič and back again, from a Walking Guide of Slovenia.

Beginning at the source of the River Soča (almost a place of pilgrimage for many Slovenians) the walk soon climbs to a high-level traverse, offering stunning views over the Julian Alps, to the high Vršič Pass.
Start/Finish – Koča pri Izviru Soče

Distance – 11km/6.9miles
Height gain – approx 900m
Time – 4h17min
Grade – strenuous. Mainly on good paths and tracks, but the initial climb is a steep and unrelenting ascent of 500m.
Recommended map(s) – are the 1:50 000 Triglavski Narodni Park or either of the Julijske Alpe maps (vzhodni del – eastern or zahodni del – western) published by PZS.

Refreshments on route – Koča pri Izviru Soče at the start plus Tičarjev Dom and kiosks on Vršić.

Public transport – There is a limited bus service over the Vršič Pass. Alight at Hairpin No. 49 and walk up the road to the Koča pri Izviru Soče (1.5km/0.9mi)

Nearest Town/Village – Kranjska Gora, to the north and over the Vršič Pass, has a full range of accommodation and shops.
Trenta, to the south, has camping sites and bars and some self-catering accommodation. Further down the Soča Valley, Bovec has the full range of accommodation and shops.
